I disegni per Season Sketch li ho realizzati la mattina che è nevicato a Roma. Mi sono alzata felice e leggera come in un fumetto di Charlie Brown. Ho disegnato ispirata e di getto come un vulcano, 30 disegni nel giro di un ora. Volevo trasferire quella gioia, subito, su carta. In effetti, per me disegnare è una danza con l’inchiostro, è ritmo musicale, è urgenza di comunicare. Disegno in piedi e qualunque soggetto è una scusa per esprimere il mio pensiero danzante. Paradossalmente ho danzato con l’argomento del Blocco dello scrittore il giorno in cui ero meno bloccata in assoluto! Ecco, quel giorno ho potuto ridere e prendermi in giro per tutte le volte che mi assale la gnagnarella e per quelle scuse assurde che un tempo mi impedivano di disegnare. Romanticismi a parte, cerco di fare dei disegni non troppo bellini e ben eseguiti perché amo molto la spontaneità e quello che a prima vista sembra un errore/orrore è un segno onesto prima di tutto con me stessa.

WORK…ING IN PROGRESS, FORSE!
Martina Vanda, nata a Roma, è artista illustratrice, autrice di picture books e ceramista. Disegna da quando aveva tre anni e non ha mai smesso. Il segno sul foglio è la sua voce, la mano che disegna il suo pensiero. I suoi lavori figurano in numerosi eventi relativi all’illustrazione contemporanea: Bologna Children’s Book Fair 2012, 2015, 2016; BIB Biennale di Bratislava 2012; CJBook Korea 2010; XII Biennale BCJEM, DPI Magazine. I suoi libri illustrati sono pubblicati in Italia, Francia, Spagna, Cina, Messico e Cile. La sua prima opera illustrata ¡Estela, grita muy fuerte! è stata tradotta in 7 lingue indigene del Messico e ha venduto oltre 120mila copie. I suoi disegni e ceramiche sono esposti in gallerie d’arte contemporanea in Italia e all’estero tra cui la Galleria Nuages di Milano e Sintra Gallery di Gothenburg. Ha studiato illustrazione allo IED di Roma, nel 2000 ha vinto un anno di scholarship all’Esag di Parigi e dal 2004 al 2012 ha vissuto a Barcellona per studiare ceramica.
Il tratto distintivo dei suoi disegni è il movimento, il senso del tempo che passa. È ritmo che accoglie errori, pentimenti e cancellature come in uno spartito musicale. Ecco allora, per Season Sketch work…ing, il suo immergersi in un vorticoso momento creativo che si sviluppa in tempi musicali dove la penna agisce come la bacchetta di un direttore d’orchestra:
VIVACE CON BRIO, si raccolgono le idee;
ANDANTE, MA NON TROPPO, si scelgono le idee;
ALLEGRISSIMO CON MOTO, si ribellano le idee;
ADAGIETTO SOSTENUTO, l’opera volge al termine e tutto sembra sotto controllo, forse!

I did the drawings for Season Sketch on the morning that it snowed in Rome. I got up happy and carefree, as in a Charlie Brown comic book. I drew with volcanic inspiration and produced 30 drawings within an hour. I wanted to transfer that happiness on to paper immediately. In fact, for me drawing is a dance with ink, it’s musical rhythm, an urgency to communicate. Drawing standing up whatever the subject is an excuse to express my dancing thoughts. Paradoxically, I experienced writer’s block the day I was most inspired! That day I could laugh and tease myself for all the times that the gnagnarella irritated me and for those absurd excuses that once prevented me from drawing. Romanticism aside, I try not to make my drawings too beautiful and executed because I love spontaneity and what at first glance seems to be a mistake or a horror is an honest sign, first and foremost, of myself.

WORK…ING IN PROGRESS, MAYBE!
Martina Vanda, born in Rome, is an illustrator, ceramic artist and an author of picture books. She has been drawing since she was three years old and has never stopped. The mark on the sheet of paper is her voice and the hand that draws is her thought. Her works feature in many events related to contemporary illustration. For example the Bologna Children’s Book Fair 2012, 2015, 2016, the BIB Biennial in Bratislava 2012, the CJBook Korea 2010, XII Biennial BCJEM, DPI Magazine. Her illustrated books are published in Italy, France, Spain, China, Mexico and Chile. Her first illustrated work ¡Estela, grita muy fuerte! has been translated into 7 indigenous languages of Mexico and has sold over 120 thousand copies. Her drawings and ceramics are on display in contemporary art galleries in Italy and overseas, including the Galleria Nuages in Milan and the Sintra Gallery in Gothenburg. She studied illustration at the IED in Rome and in 2000 won a scholarship to ESAG in Paris and from 2004 to 2012 she lived in Barcelona to study ceramics.
The distinctive feature of her drawings is movement, the sense of passing time. It is a rhythm that welcomes errors, regrets and deletions like in a musical score. Here then, for Season Sketch work… ing, she immerses herself in a creative whirlwind moment that develops in musical times where the pen acts as a conductor’s baton:
VIVACE CON BRIO, ideas are gathered;

ADAGIETTO SOSTENUTO, the opera draws to a close and everything seems under control, perhaps!
